Overcoming the High Cost of Medical Treatment in New Zealand

Every year, thousands of New Zealanders deal with a critical disease. Those closest to the sufferer also bear some of the emotional and financial weight of serious illnesses. Many New Zealanders are emotionally and financially unable to cope with the high cost of medical treatment and hospitalizations associated with serious illnesses. Not only so, but critical illness frequently results in permanent impairment or death, both of which have far-reaching implications for both individuals and communities. While medical progress has helped more people survive certain catastrophic diseases, there is still much to be done to ensure that all New Zealanders have access to preventative, early diagnostic, and treatment services at reasonable costs. Educating the public about critical illness in NZ is essential if they are to take measures to improve their own and their loved ones’ health outcomes.
