Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

1. Definition and rationale

Definition:

rTMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that generates rapidly varying magnetic pulses near the scalp via an electromagnetic coil that This induces an electric field to modulate cortical excitability, thereby treating neuropsychiatric disorders.

Mechanism of action:

Stimulates nerve cells in specific brain regions (e.g., left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, LDPFC) via magnetic fields to modulate their activity.

High frequency (>1 Hz) increases cortical excitability, low frequency (<1 Hz) decreases cortical excitability.

Treatment of depression, PTSD, and other disorders may be related to activation of brain areas with reduced activity due to disease.
