What Is a Standard Rectifier Diode?

A standard rectifier diode is a silicon semiconductor device that allows current to flow primarily in one direction. Its main function is to convert alternating current into direct current or block reverse-current flow in an electronic circuit.

A general purpose rectifier diode is commonly selected when:

The circuit operates at mains frequency or another relatively low frequency.

Reverse recovery speed is not a critical design requirement.

Stable rectification and surge-current capability are required.

Cost, availability and supply continuity are important.

The design uses a mature axial or SMD package.

The diode is used for input rectification, reverse-polarity protection or low-frequency freewheeling.

 

General-purpose rectifiers such as the 1N4001–1N4007 family are widely specified for power supplies, converters, inverters and freewheeling applications. Typical product characteristics include low forward voltage, low leakage current and resistance to short-duration forward-current surges.

A standard rectifier is not automatically suitable for every switching circuit. When the diode must switch rapidly between forward conduction and reverse blocking, its reverse recovery behavior must also be considered.
