Standard Disc-Type Suspension Glass Insulators
The glass disc suspension insulator is a foundational component within the broader category of glass electrical insulators, designed to provide reliable insulation and mechanical support for conductors in power transmission lines. The standard type is engineered for general transmission environments, offering a balanced combination of electrical insulation, mechanical strength, and economic efficiency. Each unit is capable of withstanding working voltages, overvoltage effects, and the vertical, horizontal, and tension loads of conductors.
Glass Electrical Insulator Structure
Each glass disc suspension insulator is assembled from three primary components:
Tempered glass component – Provides the core electrical insulation and offers the self-breaking characteristic for easy fault detection
Iron cap – Provides mechanical connection and protection for the glass component
Steel foot – Serves as the attachment point for the conductor or adjacent insulator
During assembly, a soft gasket is placed at the top of the steel foot, and an asphalt layer is applied where the iron cap inner cavity contacts the cement adhesive. These elements buffer thermal expansion and contraction, preventing damage during temperature fluctuations and ensuring long-term structural integrity.
